Adventure Plus

What is it?

Adventure Plus is a free* one-year, full-time programme for 16-18 year olds, with a blend of educational outcomes, accredited personal development certifications and pastoral support. It is designed for those who may not be exactly sure what they want to do next or are not ready for a full-time college course or employment.

The aim of the programme is to boost young people’s confidence and self-esteem whilst preparing them for the next stage of education, employment or further training. Participants can expect to take part in a wide range of team building and challenging outdoor activities, including mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, climbing, archery, overnight expeditions, orienteering and bush craft skills.

The programme starts in early September and follow school term times. We meet at HTP Apprenticeship College’s Riverbank Campus at Little London, Newport.

Maths and English

As part of the course each learner will be able to make progress at an appropriate level towards either the Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and English syllabus, providing the best prospects for progression at the end of the academic year and beyond.

What you can gain from the programme:

  • Level 1 NOCN Certificate in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development
  • The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme
  • Maths and English at an appropriate level (Functional skills or GCSE)
  • Work experience in a suitable local placement where appropriate

What about afterwards?

The Adventure Plus Programme is fundamentally a bridge programme to support young people into the next stages of life – therefore at the beginning, we look to the end. Many learners progress onto Further Education, Apprenticeships or full-time work based on their aspirations and development throughout the course.

Skills for Employability, Training & Personal Development

Each unit of the Certificate is aimed at different elements of employment and personal development. Based on a reflective practice the course is delivered and assessed in a variety of practical and class-based methods, based around an individual’s needs.

As the main aim of the Adventure Plus Programme, the Certificate develops skills relating to employment: building self-confidence with presentation skills, providing the tools for gaining employment, including job-seeking skills, and embedding teamwork into everything we do.

Personal development is a pivotal part of the Certificate which is promoted through emotional intelligence, healthy eating and instilling a habit of “Plan-Do-Review” – a skill with wide-reaching potential beyond the course.

As a one-year course for post-16 education, Adventure Plus provides a unique opportunity to push young people outside their comfort zones in order to grow. This growth happens when they are exposed to the managed risk and challenging situations created with our adventurous activities.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Challenge & Adventure learners will work towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, culminating in a two day, self-contained expedition as a group in addition to their individual Physical, Skill and Volunteering sections.

I love these guys! Helped turn my life around. God knows what would have happened if I didn’t have this group. They do such a great job with young adults, so please support them!
