26 years helping young people on the Isle of Wight

What we do

We support young people on the Isle of Wight, using adventurous outdoor activities alongside tailored support to help raise confidence, self-esteem and aspirations. Founded by police officers in 1992, initially to prevent young people becoming involved in crime, the charity is now able to support a unique provision for young Islanders at a pivotal time in their lives.

How we do it

We work closely with leading training provider HTP Apprenticeship College and provide a fully funded one-year, full-time course for 16–18 year-olds with a blend of educational achievements, personal development, qualifications and pastoral support. We use outdoor adventurous activities, including mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, climbing, archery, overnight expeditions, orienteering and bushcraft skills.

Each learner will also be able to make progress at an appropriate level towards either the Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and English syllabus, providing the best prospects for progression at the end of the academic year and beyond.

Adventure Plus

Our full-time programme runs for a single academic year and provides opportunities to develop experience and qualifications to progress into Further Education, employment or training. We tailor the programme to the individual, while working together as a group – overcoming barriers such as a lack of self-confidence, emotional intelligence or discipline.

Real skills, real growth, real qualifications

The main qualification from the Adventure Plus Programme is the NOCN Level 1 Certificate in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development. This is designed to provide an introduction to working in a wide range of careers. Learners will gain skills in problem-solving and time management, computer basics and, if required, help with Maths & English.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

As part of the Adventure Plus Programme, our learners have the opportunity to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award during their year with us. Made up of four sections – Physical, Skills, Volunteering and Expedition – the Award allows for a wide range of experiences with the support of Challenge & Adventure staff.

Where we do it

Our programme office at HTP Apprenticeship College’s Riverbank Campus in Newport serves as the central meeting place for our learners. Much of our time however is spent at our facilities in Parkhurst Forest; a fantastic resource nestled within 395 hectares of ancient woodland. Our minibuses also provide the freedom to explore the Isle of Wight to its full potential.

Why we’re needed

Finishing school can leave many young people without a clear direction. By running a one-year course to identify an individual plan, we are able to achieve real progress in a small group environment. We work with young people from a variety of backgrounds, including those with behavioural, social and learning barriers who may otherwise not be prepared for other progression routes.

Why it works

Working in the outdoors provides a level playing field for young people to engage with a ‘clean slate ethos’ based on mutual respect, hard work and trust. From this platform, our learners are able to work towards relevant, practical and achievable qualifications. This promotes the increased confidence and self-esteem needed to re-engage with the world around them.

Adventurers tell their stories…

Kayleigh and Martin came to us from very different backgrounds, and with different ideas and attitudes, but they’ve both found fun, challenge and change along the way.

I absolutely love Challenge and Adventure. You all really helped me change my life for the better, helping me with understanding my emotions, improving my social skills and making friends – I can’t thank you enough!

Kayleigh Sutherland

I wouldn’t be half the person I am today if it wasn’t for the amazing people at Challenge and Adventure

Frequently asked questions

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

which young people is this for?

We support young people across the Isle of Wight overcome barriers to success and identify their next steps in life. We are a practical, outdoors based course with educational outcomes; a great bridge from traditional schooling to independent adult life. We would love to meet any young person who feels they could benefit from what we do.

does it cost anything?

For 16–18 year-olds, our Adventure Plus Programme is fully funded by the Government. In any other circumstances please get in touch so we can discuss on an individual basis.

is it easy to get to?

Our programme office is centrally based in Little London, Newport. We are asily accessible from all parts of the Island by public transport, and there is support available for eligible learners in the form of bursaries.

are the activities difficult? and what about safety?

All of our activities are delivered in ways that support individuals to progress out of their comfort zones in order to be successful. This also means each activity is risk assessed and delivered by appropriately experienced and qualified instructors.

is this a long-term commitment?

The Adventure Plus Programme runs for the entire academic year (September–July) and there is an expectation that joining the programme means completing it. We will only take on young people whom we believe at initial meeting are likely to succeed with our support.

what if i've got issues or problems before i start?

We are passionate about championing every young person we meet, and whilst our provision may not be suitable for everyone, we would encourage you get in touch so that we can discuss your individual circumstances to see how we may be able to help.
